Is stainless steel a non-ferrous metal?
- May 02, 2018 -

Ferrous metals and alloys contain iron; non-ferrous materials do not.

Stainless steel is popular among various industries due to its properties of Excellent resistance to corrosion and Protection against Corrosion. One can find different types of products such as Stainless Steel Pipes, Tube Fittings, Pipe Fittings, Flanges, Tubes, Fasteners, Sheets, Rods,Bars and so forth are used in different industries.

Stainless Steels are alloys that are made up of iron and generally contain around 11.5% chromium. For obtaining special properties, nickel, carbon, chromium, and other elements can be added to it.

Stainless Steel is sometimes a non-ferrous metal. The easiest way to check is to use a magnet. If it sticks - it is ferrous.

A basic breakdown of the different grades of stainless steel:

300 Stainless Steel: The most common type of stainless - found throughout the spectrum of stainless products.

304 Stainless Steel: Typically found in machine wear, exhaust systems, and cookware.

310 Stainless Steel: Found in furnace parts, oil burner parts, and welding filler wire.

316 Stainless Steel: Found in food prep and boat applications.

321 Stainless Steel: Aircraft applications.

400 Series Stainless Steel: This one is magnetic - due to the high carbon components. Used for high heat applications.
